Does the trailer have air suspension? Tee into the airbag lines and mount a gauge somewhere handy. Fast, cheap scales! Or you could get fancy and put scale beams under the 5th wheel, a pressure sensor in the trailer suspension, and a readout in the cab. I use a Vulcan setup hauling wood chips with weigh stations on the haul and have never gotten a ticket in three years. Without knowing how steep your hills are, I can't comment on the speed thing, but we have 6 and 7% grades around here so it's pretty normal to have the pedal mashed and be down a few gears with 550 hp and 95k. Running 70 takes more power than 60, for sure. A turbo boost gauge will show that.

Its common no matter what size or engine type, with that 855 big cam 3 your likely set at 400-425 hp and if you go to pdi manifold and intake, matched injectors best you likely will get is 475 to 525 hp but that block style might not hold out to long without a complete out of frame,,,, but with that setup you can slide an n14 Cummings in there

Has more to do with what rear ends you have. I have 4.11 rears and that causes my truck to run 1500 (ish) RPMs at 60 mph 1750 (ish) rpms at 70 mph. It also limits my top end for speed. If I had 3.55s I could get a higher speed with a lower rpm.

The truck engine has a sweet spot in the rpms You want to find that! Where does it pull like draft horses, where does it drop off. Going up that grade with speed may require a gear drop of two to get back int the sweet spot rpm. Just my two cents.

It doesn't matter how much power you are making. When you come to a hill it's going to pull down the engine. Old engines make their peak torque and horsepower higher in the rpm range of the engine. New engines are just the opposite for the most part. So in this drivers opinion drop a gear and stand on it son. Oh and I love the old iron on the farm.

For a big cam 3 it's running fairly normal. Another comment said that motor is not made for the new fuel and he's right. Try putting a half gallon to a whole gallon of regular transmission fluid in the fuel tanks Everytime you fill up. I have a 60 series Detroit and that's what I have done for the 6 and a half years I have had it and it helps keep the fuel system lubed up since they took all the lubrication out of the new fuel. I love the videos! Keep up the good work! Oh and Thanks to all the farmers out there putting food on my family's table!!!

Hi Nick, I'm a 15 year, 2nd generation trucker. Pegging the throttle on an incline close to gross with that truck isn't uncommon. The only truck I ever had that just walked over hills was my old 2010 KW T800. That truck had a Cummins ISX 3, tuned at 550 hp pushing a little over 1,800 ft lbs torque. Behind it was an Eaton 18 speed and 3.90 in the diffs. In that truck I was once going uphill and speeding up. One thing that might help is to drop a gear right before you start up the hill, but with that load out and that power, not knowing your transmission or diffs, that's about the best I can offer.

Unless you're going to build it up over say 550hp you will have your foot on the floor in the hills. It's normal to be dropping a couple gears. Specially if you have higher differential ratios. I'd keep it around 450-475hp and save the engine and driveline. Maybe put a modern turbo on for better response.

Welker Farms
Welker Farms پیش 3 ماه
When I hit the bottom I'm rolling 75-80 mph to try and get a little run at the hill. Grabbing all my gears up the hill I can crest the top at 25-30 mph. On flat and level ground I'm not wide open but to get 70mph (truck speed limit) on any sort of hill I go wide open.

Need to look at your gear ratio on the rear ends plenty of horse power might need different gear ratio better suited to your application. I’m currently working on redoing a 1976 peterbilt 352 patriot addition and had to think long and hard about the gear ration I wanted to go with my big cam 400. To give best of both world as it will be mostly for show but a little farm hauling during harvest. Thanks for the videos.
mildude
mildude پیش 3 ماه
In regards to the truck, it also depends on what your gear ratio is. I used to run an old Peterbilt with a Cummins. The Pete had a rear end gear of 5.25 so I was going 60mph at 2200RPM. The transmission can also be a factor depending on how many gears it has. Hope that helps

Jamie Valdez
Jamie Valdez پیش 3 ماه
Something you might look into is the Aneroid Fuel Control. A simple diaphragm on the back of the injection pump. Gets boost air from the intake manifold that pushes the diaphragm under boosted (loaded) conditions. Tell the injector pump you need more fuel. Doesn’t make huge horse power but you will lose some if the diaphragm has a hole in it.

Don't go to Pittsburgh power. Check the rail pressure. Sounds like it may be low. What kind of boost and pyrometer readind are you getting at full load? If you loose boost your exhaust temps will increase. Also did you have any wind to contend with? Another issue is fuel. If you have treated fuel for winter that will hurt performance and economy. Those BC 3's & 4's are pretty simple it shouldn't be that hard to figure out. I pull a 53' Conestoga I have plenty of power 650+ wind will make my truck work. Plus the fuel mileage will take a 1- 1 1/2 mpg hit.

Are you driving a comercial heavy vehicle on the road/highway or making a youtube video? Are you towing the most valuable thing in your life around with the Quad or making a youtube video?? It makes me cringe when I see someone fussing with something not nessecary whist doing a task that should have 110% of their attention. We saw not long back that even with both hands free, it only takes a split second for things turn bad. Where I live it is illegal to use a phone etc while driving, and for good reason from what Ive seen in my years OTR driving. Please stick to mounted camera footage only. Please do the mounting while stationary. I appreciate what the Welkers as a family do to put this otherwise great content out for us but I would happily see less if thats what vehicle saftey meant. You cant undo a broken arm, you cant undo a wreck, and if someone picks up your still running camera on scene, what happens then with liability and insurances etc. Not worth it. Yes flat to the floor is normal. With the weight, even if you had 600hp, keeping it moving uphill, even a slight one, takes all the mumbo. Its the hang on torque thats stops the need to go banging down through gears that you would notice most with more hp. Big cam 3 400-425 would be enough, even 350 would be enough for what you guys do. It will get er done and it wont eat stuff.

The engine is only capable of so many horsepower, gearing is a big part of the problem. If you crank up your engine you are on self destruct mode. Most big cam engines are maxed out at 400 h.p. I’ve worked on Cummins engines since the late 1960 era, and people are always power hungry. It takes a lot of power to go 70 miles an hour, back in the day the speed was 60 miles an hour. If you were going to Pittsburg power the block is not capable of running that kind of power. If It was my truck I would put either KTA 600 or Signature 600. In it but then the rest of the drive train wouldn’t take the torque the engine is capable. I got several KTA to put out 700 hp on the wheels but the customer could not keep a transmission in the truck. Friend of mine, Les Steils had that much h.p.and he made a good statement, it cost a lot of money to go fast. Some drivers just seem to be able to get more power out of an engine, keep on trucking my friend

I haven't drove for many a year now but a even four hundred horsepower engine should do better than just keep up with slow cars on those light hills. I had the 3.54 rear gears and thats not good for steep hills unless your transmission is geared for it. I ran eighty at times through the dead dog flats there in washington and it was about a three percent grade for like thirty miles. At first it was a dog even though three percent don't sound like much and it was fifty plus most of the way unless overweight and then cars passing me like I was up on jacks. Then I pulled the pump and took it to a injection shop to get it upgraded., they said it was all it would take and to leave it alone but a guy like me who owns and drives it, needs exactly what he wants. Now if you put your foot into it, it would burn the engine up but using that throttle right and making sure she's running free, you know what I mean, I changed the fuel button from a thirty button to a ten button as the numbers get smaller like wire, the fuel hole gets bigger, I added three shims and got the rail pressure up and after that, I could fly through the valley and it done it easy. If the pump has a android on it, see if they can pull it off as your the driver and it shouldn't overheat. Just watch the pirometer and not let it get too hot for more than just moments really as thats when liners move... uh oh time then

Depends on your rear ends what the ratio but lower the number higher the gears .on a mechanical engine you have too put the foot down before you hit the hill too start too get the momentum up some.but yes you have too put the foot feed down too get the horse power out of them.
